Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of therapy that helps people feel less upset by painful memories.

During EMDR, a person thinks about an upsetting memory while the therapist asks them to follow side-to-side movements called bilateral stimulation. This can be done with eye movements, tapping with the hands or listening to audio sounds.

EMDR lowers the intensity of traumatic memories and emotions and boosts feelings of safety and resilience. When delivered with careful pacing, clear consent, and attention to the person’s readiness, EMDR can support your nervous system to move from surviving to thriving.
