How to choose an online psychologist in Alberta
A profile can help you make a shortlist. A conversation helps you ask about clinical fit, practical details and what working together could look like.
You do not have to know the right treatment method before asking for help.

Start with the support you are looking for
Are you looking for individual therapy, couples therapy, or support for traumatic experiences? Describe what is affecting your life and what you would like to change. You can keep this brief during an initial phone call.
Ask whether the psychologist works with your age group and the concern you are bringing. For online therapy, clarify where you need to be physically located during sessions.
Ask about training and treatment
- What experience do you have working with concerns like mine?
- Which approaches might you consider, and why?
- What happens during the first sessions?
- How will we agree on goals and check whether therapy is helping?
- If this service does not fit, what other options could I explore?
The Canadian Psychological Association recommends discussing treatment options and expected outcomes with the psychologist. Training labels should be specific. Completing EMDR Basic Training, being EMDRIA Certified, and being an Approved Consultant or Trainer describe different credentials.
Marissa is an EMDR Therapist. Kyle is an EMDRIA Approved Trainer and Consultant. These descriptions help you understand their training; they do not guarantee an outcome.
Check the practical fit
- What is the session fee and length?
- What days and times are available, and is there a waitlist?
- Can the practice bill my insurer directly? What remains my responsibility?
- What are the cancellation terms?
- What do I need for a private online session?
Ask the practice to confirm current details before booking therapy. For couples sessions, also check your insurer's coverage rules.
