Kyle Poon, M.Ed., R.Psych
Do you struggle with painful memories, trauma, anxiety, grief or experiences that continue to affect your relationships, work, sleep, body or sense of self? Do you feel exhausted by trying to "just move on," yet part of you still feels stuck in the past?
Trauma can leave you feeling disconnected, on edge, ashamed, angry, numb or unsure why certain reactions feel so big. I believe healing should not mean having to figure this out alone.
I'm Kyle (he/him), an anti-racist Registered Psychologist and EMDRIA Approved Trainer and Consultant based in Edmonton. I founded KP Psychological, where I offer EMDR and trauma-focused therapy online to adults across Alberta.

My approach
I focus on EMDR therapy and trauma-focused care. EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. It's a structured therapy that aims to help your brain process stuck, disturbing memories, so they're stored more like ordinary memories.
We start by understanding where you are now, what you have been carrying and what you want to feel different. Then we plan together.
My style is calm, collaborative and direct when needed. I try to bring both skill and humanity into the therapy room. I believe good therapy is not just about techniques; it is also about feeling understood, respected and supported while doing meaningful work.
A few things guide how I work:
- Collaboration. You're the one who knows your body, so we work as a team.
- Consent at every stage. If you want to stop, we stop.
- Honesty and transparency. I explain everything as we go.
- Structure that fits you. EMDR follows a structured, 8-phase process, and I adapt it to your situation.
Alongside EMDR, I draw on other approaches when they fit:
- cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) skills, for difficult thoughts and strong emotions
- ego-state and parts work, including work informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS), to understand different parts of yourself
- somatic (body-based) approaches and mindfulness
- Motivational Interviewing, for mixed feelings about change
My goal is to help you reduce distress, restore daily functioning and feel more connected to yourself and your life. Together, we aim to move beyond simply coping.
I also believe in doing my own work. I endeavour to always better myself, as a father, a husband, a family member and as an individual.

Who I work with
I work with adults, including older adults (65+), who have been impacted by childhood, relational, racial, sexual, occupational or repeated trauma. This includes:
- first responders, RCMP members, correctional officers, and nurses and other health care workers
- Veterans and military members
- BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of colour) clients
- First Nations and other Indigenous clients
From personal experience, I have a passion for working with first responders and with people who are BIPOC. I care deeply about ethical, culturally responsive and effective trauma treatment.
I also work with:
- complex PTSD, which can follow long-lasting or repeated trauma
- occupational stress injuries, meaning mental health injuries from your work
- dissociative disorders, where you may feel cut off from yourself, your memories or your surroundings
- functional neurological disorder (FND), where trouble with how the brain sends and receives signals causes real physical symptoms
I also support adults with depression, anxiety and stress, grief, anger, addiction and substance use, OCD and ADHD, and I offer therapy for men.
I'm an LGBTQ+ ally and welcome clients of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
EMDR training and consultation for clinicians
In addition to therapy, I provide EMDR consultation and training for clinicians. As an EMDRIA Approved Trainer and Consultant, I train other clinicians in EMDR through EMDR Consulting. I teach the EMDRIA Approved curriculum created by Roy Kiessling, founder of EMDR Consulting, who personally trained and mentored me.
Calm with Kyle
I share videos about EMDR, trauma and calming your nervous system on my YouTube channel, Calm with Kyle, which has more than 47,000 subscribers. The videos offer general information and aren't a substitute for therapy.
This welcome video is a good way to get a sense of who I am.
Some of my guided practices for anxiety, sleep and grounding are gathered on our free resources page.
Fees and availability
I work online only, by secure video, with clients who are physically in Alberta at the time of each session. My hours are Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 6:30 pm Alberta time.
I currently have a waitlist. A free 15-minute phone consult is a good way to talk about timing, or about starting sooner with my colleague Marissa Whalley, R.Psych.
My fee is $250 per 50-minute individual session. Alberta Health Care doesn't cover psychologists, but many extended health plans do, and we can bill most insurance companies directly. Most clients pay by Interac e-Transfer.
I also accept coverage through Veterans Affairs Canada, the RCMP, Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB), WCB and the Indian Residential Schools program (IRS RHSP). Some programs need approval before they cover sessions. Our fees and insurance page explains coverage and billing.
